afuna: Cat under a blanket. Text: "Cats are just little people with Fur and Fangs" (Default)
Since my last update, I have done 18 more bugs, giving me a total of 29 patches, whee.

I also have been doing Bug 117, but in bits and spurts because I haven't had the large chunk of time I want to sit down and just hack on something meaty, so it's mostly been bits and pieces here and there.

Quick rundown, and most of these have not been committed yet, so possibly there shall be changes --

Styles:
don't apply custom user layer to preview of a new theme; strip out user-entered links in subjects for entries aggregate views/collapsed comments, so that you can click through; appended ?style=mine and ?s2id=x appended to journal view links; allow ?s2id=x to work for anyone as long as all layers are public

Administrative:
new sysban type: spamreport

Backend optimization:
cache user tag lookup in RTE; memcache for nonexistent s2id

Misc interface improvements:
add consistent spacing between comment links in site scheme; add a bit of crossposting info to entryprops.bml; handle cut and uncut text better in latest news module; dynamic inbox count in the Inbox link under the Read menu; add link back to journal if there's no next/prev entry; link directly to the original feed's URL from tools/opml; dropdown for journaltype filter on network page; remember the option for "Disable Auto-Formatting"

Misc bugfixes:
fix ?show=PCF logic in tools/opml; respect the option to not save colors when adding someone to your circle

Apparently, where I'd last left off was figuring out how to start the Gearman daemon.

And apparently, how to start the Gearman daemon is simply, from the commandline:

gearmand

Hehehehe.

Follow up to my previous entry on separating my identities

I am:

* transferring all my tech-related mailing lists to the email address under my real name, so that if I feel inclined to delurk, I can do so freely, and without feeling conflicted

* relaxing the separation between identities a bit. I still deliberately avoid linking afuna to my real name, so that the connection is not easily googleable, but I'm also not going to worry too much if I slip up occasionally

* for now, keeping all my Dreamwidth and greasemonkey-related development on afuna, and all other development under my real name. There are some considerations re: opportunities and etc that may make me change my mind, but this seems best until I've made a final decision

I've decided against setting up yet another pseudonym which I would have linked to my real name, but just barely (I used to half-seriously think about setting up another layer of pseudonym to put all my RL accounts under and not hide the link between that pseudonym and my RL identity at all. And that way, I could have my public-facing nick, behind which would be my RL identity, and serving as a buffer against anyone inadvertently poking through multiple layers of identity*, then anything under "afuna" would be doubly separated and very far and away**. I only gave up that idea because names are hard

* I do not think anyone actually cares, but there is the process of making casual connections, etc...

** and that is simpler than my original plan of having a more plausible real-name-type-name behind "afuna" to serve as yet another buffer (Jane Doe! Mary Smith! Candy Fifth Avenue. YOU KNOW). I never actually got around to it, because a bunch of my schoolmates dug out my online identity (And hi you know who you are o/ o/ o/ o/ o/ o/ o/)

While I was setting up a couple of personal accounts and linking them up to work friends, it hit me: I am careful about who I reveal my online identity to because I don't want to be polite.

For several reasons, I am very restrained offline. I find interesting things that other people don't (code, etc), I don't find interesting things that other people do (people, etc), I say the wrong things, etc etc so I've learned to filter like crazy mad, but in a quiet polite way.

Online, I talk about things that interest me. Offline, I keep quiet because that is polite.

I like my relative lack of restraint here, when I don't feel like I have to please everybody (or even anybody). It took me a long time to get to the point where I felt I could say things freely (I'm not there yet in some ways but I am much better here than elsewhere), and I worry that if I ever merge the two, then restraint will win out.

I don't want that.
