Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007 01:30 pmAt least two of the premiere medical schools in my country have a higher minimum QPI for female students than for male students because girls can get pregnant and drop out of medical school.
Seriously?
Seriously?

Date: 2007-10-23 05:56 am (UTC)Granted, medical school is difficult enough without having to worry about being pregnant, but it's still not right.
I actually thought (or was hoping) that you'd know more about this *g*

Date: 2007-10-23 06:13 am (UTC)They're worried about 'dropouts' if they allow more women, but I do realize that more men drop out than women because the women who apply for PGH are hardier and a lot more competitive. Besides, the school is run by old farts (male obviously) so there's this obvious sexual discrimination going on.
I have never met a UP-PGH grad who is a good doctor anyway. Mind you. They're smart, but they're terribly horrible when it comes to being human.

Date: 2007-10-24 05:32 am (UTC)UP has stringent requirements for taking in med students. They allow about 300 students max to enter their med program, and one has to have at least achieved a latin honor to even qualify (unless they have contacts).
I've heard the rule for UST, but I didn't know UP applied it too, but I guess UP has a lot to lose if students drop out, because students pay chickenfeed for med school tuition. Though that doesn't justify sexism at all. >.<

Date: 2007-10-23 06:54 am (UTC)it does make sense, on one hand. Women *are* the ones who get pregnant, and are the ones who will have to take medical leave. Also, it also assumes that women are the ones who will resign to look after the kids when they have them.
*GRR*

Date: 2007-10-23 01:37 pm (UTC)maybe it's been that way since ever before (just a tradition).
anyway, they should provide a 'study' as a basis - where they show that most female med students just get pregnant and drop out.
