At least two of the premiere medical schools in my country have a higher minimum QPI for female students than for male students because girls can get pregnant and drop out of medical school.

Seriously?

That's such bullcrap. My classmate just gave birth and had 1 week of maternity leave. She's doing fine as far as I can see.

If only men were like seahorses...

Yeah, UP-PGH and UST ang dalawang schools eh. They really want an equal ratio between male and female 1:1, but there are more female students than male students who actually apply to UST. Therefore, we are at a disadvantage.

They're worried about 'dropouts' if they allow more women, but I do realize that more men drop out than women because the women who apply for PGH are hardier and a lot more competitive. Besides, the school is run by old farts (male obviously) so there's this obvious sexual discrimination going on.

I have never met a UP-PGH grad who is a good doctor anyway. Mind you. They're smart, but they're terribly horrible when it comes to being human.

UST requires a higher QPI for females? I'm a freshman there, and we have a female to male ratio of about 2:1, haha.

PGH is where UP med students from UP Manila train. And you can be sure it's damn good training because PGH has all kinds of diseases the students will get exposed to, which they have to solve using dated facilities sometimes, rush deadlines. :D

UP has stringent requirements for taking in med students. They allow about 300 students max to enter their med program, and one has to have at least achieved a latin honor to even qualify (unless they have contacts).

I've heard the rule for UST, but I didn't know UP applied it too, but I guess UP has a lot to lose if students drop out, because students pay chickenfeed for med school tuition. Though that doesn't justify sexism at all. >.<

From what I heard, there's actually a quota for the female / male ratio here in the med school. Which is based on the same (stupid) reason that you gave.

it does make sense, on one hand. Women *are* the ones who get pregnant, and are the ones who will have to take medical leave. Also, it also assumes that women are the ones who will resign to look after the kids when they have them.

*GRR*

Is that assumption borne by facts? (the higher drop-out rate, I mean - not that women will get pregnant more often than men. :-) )

Oh, heavens, this is the kind of reasoning that crosses my eyes.

i don't get it either, but the simpler answer is that there's a bias against women in the medical field. it may be wrong or right, but it's a gender bias.
maybe it's been that way since ever before (just a tradition).
anyway, they should provide a 'study' as a basis - where they show that most female med students just get pregnant and drop out.
