I am going to challenge myself to use no emoticons for one week (<3s excluded, because <3s are not emoticons, they are A WAY OF LIFE).

I am imagining the next seven days without emoticons. My fingers itch already.

Are you expressing sadness, frustration, happiness, confusion, hunger? I cannot understand you. :(

*giggles; taunts as well* (Are you swearing off star-encased actions, too? ^_^)

This actually kind of tempts me to try a gauntlet of my own, that being avoiding internetisms for a week. I think I might go crazy within a day but it'd be a fascinating exercise.

Oh, good experiment! IRC does tend to reduce the vocabulary to various combinations of punctuation -- I realised it first after a few weeks on IRC, when I looked back at my recent entries and found every paragraph (at least) contained one, or an asterisked action. Best of luck!

You can join me! I'm not really into using emoticons, so I rarely ever use them, even in IRC.

That's... got to be pretty hard.

To me, smileys are an integral part of my communication on the Internet, because otherwise there's really not a good way of concisely saying "Despite what I just said, here's how I feel about the situation", or dropping hints.

":)" and ":(" are, to me, as essential a part of one's Internet vocabulary as English words are. So going without them, for me, would be hard.

And yes, I've realised the irony that I'm making this comment without any smileys in it. ;p (although... there's one. So, um.)

Anyway. Good luck! :D (...and another. Heh.)

True. Having said that, I tend to interpret them differently depending on the speaker and the sentence in question. So "Thank you for your gift! :)" I'm likely to interpret in a purer way than "Thank you for being a jerk. :)", given that the line itself is being sarcastic, and obviously they're not *really* happy about it. A person's use of these smileys and in what way they use them goes a long way to how I interpret their use by that person.

Of course, that's probably just the way I do things, and others might not be able to do the same.

Man... I SHOULD DO THIS. I use them as too much of a crutch. I've actually had several people comment on my overuse of emoticons. (And not only that, but I've started abusing tildes, too~)

Heeee, I'm glad that you're still going to use the less-than-threes, though. <33333
