Domain name poll!

[Poll #1165041]
My original plan was to get one year of shared hosting at Dreamhost ($9.95 a month which includes domain name, and a lot of nifty things all ready and conveniently set up). But then further conversations with Abby led me to start eying a VPS (Dreamhost offers a plan, invite-only, which adds another $15.95 per month.)
Then I talked to
ciaran_h, and now I'm leaning towards taking a couple of months at Linode, the cheapest plan has $19.95 a month but I have to pay a bit extra for a domain name, since the plan doesn't come with that, so I may end up doing Linode + GoDaddy. Um, unless I choose to do a .com.ph name, but I somewhat prefer the simplicity of a .com domain.
(Oh, but Dreamhost also offers domain name. I can try there as well ^_^ I just need to figure out what the difference between the two is, if any)
Linode seems to have less convenient things set up for you, but you have root access, so more flexibility, and I find that exciting. But assuming I decide that a VPS is more than I need, Dreamhost would let me drop the VPS bit, and move back to shared hosting.
At this point, though, I may just decide to take Linode, so that I'll have more options if I ever choose to use them. It's not like I'm doing anything important with that money, anyway, and the freedom it would give me to play is tantalizing.

Date: 2008-04-03 07:20 am (UTC)Weird, I would have expected afuna.com and afuna.org to be, too. It seemed like a name nobody else would have.
If you're interested in shared hosting, check out http://www.NearlyFreeSpeech.net/ -- it's pay as you go, so if you have few visitors you might even end up paying nothing at all for months, until the bandwidth and/or storage charges add up to $0.01! Plus I like the tech guy there and the support. (You can also get domains through them if you want; $8 IIRC.)

Date: 2008-04-03 07:33 am (UTC)Sort of, yeah! Not quite *confused*, so much as forget exactly which one is mine. Actually, is .com still only to be used for commercial sites? I forget.
I thought so too, but there's an afuna on myspace and flickr who *is not me*, omg.
re: nearlyfreespeech.net
Ooooh that is nice. I am tempted, but one reason I'm springing for a vps is to be able to run certain types of nonweb-based servers. However... that site is seriously nifty. I shall keep it in mind for potential future other use.

Date: 2008-04-03 07:50 am (UTC)I think that hasn't been the case for years, now, and anyone who's pretending otherwise is deluding themselves.
.com .net .org are pretty much interchangeable now, in my opinion; I don't think anyone is seriously suggesting they be restricted to commercial sites/network infrastructure providers/non-profit organisations (respectively); that horse has left the stable.
(Though it's true that having a non-profit organisation take a .com domain still seems a bit unusual, and I think .net is the least used of the three big ones.)

Bluh? Wow!

Ah yes, you wouldn't be happy at NFSN with that - no persistent processes of any kind.
However... that site is seriously nifty.
It is! At least I think so.
I checked them out when I found out they host bugmenot.com, and thought it was pretty nifty. Now they host all my sites but one, and DNS for one domain. (And I'd host my other main domain there, too, if DENIC didn't have silly rules about name server IP ranges.)

Date: 2008-04-03 07:31 am (UTC)I was also going to suggest afu.na (in Namibia's ccTLD)!

Date: 2008-04-03 09:18 am (UTC)I guess it's one way of encouraging using SLD, the way many countries do (nearly) exclusively (for example, exclusively in .uk except for a couple odd exceptions, formerly exclusively in .jp)
I tried finding price information on the main .na NiC but failed to do so.

Date: 2008-04-03 05:12 pm (UTC)It may be a moot point, because I am leaning towards afunamatata.com now.

Date: 2008-04-03 05:26 pm (UTC)Thank you for that link! I've finally decided to go with Linode for the hosting, as it fits my needs better, but I think I should be able to trust Dreamhost for the domain registration.

Date: 2008-04-04 02:52 am (UTC)Well, they never told me what happened, but I know how they fixed it -- they moved my site to a completely different server. -.-

Date: 2008-04-03 05:38 pm (UTC)It is tempting because of the shorter name, though!

Date: 2008-04-05 03:14 am (UTC)Most people probably use LoudTwitter (I use a custom script which I run from my own server)
