Damnit. I think my hard drive just failed. That's the second one in two months.

Do you have anything in your room that might be producing a magnetic field, like a large/heavy speaker or amplifier?
I've killed a usb thumbdrive with a subwoofer before.

That's so annoying. Mine died last month. It had been sent to me by Maxtor as a replacement for the previous one, about six months before. *facepalm* At least it's still under warranty, so I got a new one.

BTW, do you have any recs for HD brands?

ah never knew that. try getting your computers to RAID mode. (gaah this MIS stuff I still remember). You can get two hard drives which mirror each other, so when one fails, the other one is used. :D. i think it doesn't matter what brand, as long as mahaba ang warranty.

Well, Seagate bought Maxtor, which just doesn't inspire trust ;)

Eh? Isn't that kind of strange? :o I dunno, I've never had an HD fail me (not that I want to), but I wonder what could be causing it?

What things, if you know of them? I'd hate to have my HD crashed... :o

true true. sir coronel once said that the hard drive heats up enough to fry an egg.
apple macbooks are prone daw to this damage since there were early reports of macs being too hot to put on your lap (somewhere in those reviews before)

Not that I know much, but maybe it's just conked out, and the data is still salvageable? Have you had it checked? It might not be too late.

It's nothing.

Coincidence though, I just got myself a new HD (160GB). O_o

get one of those linux live cds and save data through a usb stick.
ubuntu seems the best at these things, but you can try specialty distro's like DSL, sysresccd (sysresccd.org), or others. (me thinks they're bootable on a mac, i'm not sure, but i just think linux runs on anything). find the version for the right chipset, if intel na yung sayo, most likely may runable na diyan. but if not, find the one for ppc.
try this link i googled : http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20050302225659382
"Recover a dead hard drive using dd"

welcome. XD

http://www.stellarinfo.com/download.htm -> free i think na hd recov soft
http://www.prosofteng.com/ -> another one
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2686 ->coming from apple.

goodluck though. i think i should install them too for my own good.

oh and do back up to gmail (if you have broadband, why not?). XD. they also invented this thing called gmail HD, which accesses gmail as if it were a hard drive.
