Heeee, yeah, I do the same thing when reading -- I can afford a bit less concentration for fiction, need a bit more concentration for non-fiction, but in general when reading I can only knit things where I already know the pattern. I can't do any reading while I'm in the familiarizing stage.
Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. I bet it would look completely random. Oh though, hmmmm. On second thought maybe not as random as all that since letters would all start with 01, and then most of the punctuation marks would mostly start with 00, and ohhh and you'd have a lot more punctuation marks in perl than say English so.
Technically I can! Except I can't really knit anymore for the obvious reason. I knit this scarf for my sister over the course of about a year, one row or less at a time.
Mostly it comes in handy that I can code and pet the cat at the same time.
