  • I jailbreaked -- jailbroke? -- my phone. Somehow I thought the results would be more exciting. Hm.

  • purrr, update page. You'll see what I mean soon *g*

  • have figured out the trick to knitting while reading, which means I'm getting a lot of reading done, and a lot of reading *g*

  • I managed to introduce a friend of mine to knitting! And then I introduced her to Ravelry. I feel so deliciously evil right now.

  • Flipboard is nice, but I'm not sure I want to move my reading of my twitter feed to it yet. Also, I heard you could add twitter lists, but I have no clue how

  • I am torn between taking time to think and acting quickly. I think I need both, but how all at the same time?

  • oh god, I owe people a commit run. The update page ate my brain! Now I just need to get it to let it go *shakes it out*

  • I have pictures on my phone that I want to post, but I've been too lazy to do the whole upload them to my server thing *g* So those will just have to wait

  • I crash and become really sleepy about 7 or 8pm every night, no matter how early or how late I slept the night before. I suspect jetlag, but it's been weeks!

  • had lunch with friends yesterday! Had bland uninspiring stake, but conversation more than made up for it. We ended up playing pictionary while eating (passed the ipad around, ate with one hand, drew with the other, tried not to spit up food laughing, all the while making jokes about how high tech our paper was *G*)

I'm impressed. So, how do you do that?

Jailbreaking isn't an end unto itself - the point is that you can now run programs that Apple doesn't approve for whatever reason. It means you actually own your device and do whatever you wish with it. So, go searching for jailbroken apps - you may find free alternatives for many things you otherwise either couldn't get or would have had to pay through the nose for.

I use a Palm Pre, which being that it's linux based (and custom kernels exist, which I use) means I've heavily modified it beyond stock. It has its flaws, not the least of which is miserable battery life, but it does depend a lot on what you use it for. My general advice to people who are interested in jailbreaking is do it if you know why you'd want to do it (which eliminates a large percentage of people who ask me that question).

I figured you did :). Geekery exists because we can do it, after all.

I have yet to find something I actually wanted to do on my iPhone 3G that I can't do with an iOS app from the standard app store.

As far as the jailbreaking hole goes, just take a copy of the .ipsw from ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates (you might have to go digging through time machine backups to find older versions) and store it elsewhere, so you can option-click Restore if you want to downgrade.

Apparently you can change keyboard layout in iOS4, but dvorak is only supported for hardware keyboards so far. There's AZERTY AND QWERTZ for the software keyboard, but I dunno what that means. :-)

Also, performance for iOS4.0.x has been a bit crappy on the 3G, but iOS4.1beta3 seems to have fixed those issues, so I expect iOS4.1 release to make it good again.

French (AZERTY) and German (QWERTZ) keyboard layouts, most likely.

I've installed an application which warns me whenever I try to open a PDF from the web, so I do have the tools, I just need to keep vigilant

Also remember to change your root password, especially if you have an ssh server installed. (But even if you don't, having a root password that everyone knows - "alpine" - is probably not that great an idea.)
