Strip of something

I'm basically knitting a huge drawstring pouch/bag right now (I hope to be able to fit my boxing gloves in it), and I'm cautiously cheerful so far. I'm at 320 stitches as given by the pattern, and I am at the point where I'm supposed to knit straight for 4". I'm thinking about playing with it and putting in eyelets and stuff (learned the basics of increasing/decreasing over the weekend! \o/ want to practice) but I can't find anything suitable (with the right number of stitches in the pattern) which I can adapt to knitting in the round *rueful*

There is also the issue of needing to adjust any pattern I find so it works in the round, rather than straight knitting. Feather and fan looked okay-ish to try, but I'm having difficulty with the second round; things not lining up not sure if it's because I made a mistake, or it's because I'd tried to adapt it to the round, hehehe.

So maybe I'll just stud the strip with eyelets, in a plain repetition, if I can't figure anything else out. I'll probably play with it a bit more first, though. (I have a hank of yarn which I'm using to try to mock stuff on. Casting on 60 stitches, seeing if it's possible to knit a pattern in the round, tearing everything down... So far nothing has worked! But it is kinda fun to try. But I want to finish my pouch. I am torn.)

Feather & fan in the round:

Multiple of 18 stitches

Row 1: Knit
Row 2: Knit
Row 3: (k2tog) * 3; (yo, k1) * 6; (k2tog) * 3
Row 4: Purl

If it's not lining up, it means that you either a). have the wrong number of stitches or b). are doing the wrong thing on row 3. Probably a).

heh, yeah, you replied just as I was editing to read:

and of course now I notice you gave the stitch count in your entry. 320 stitches is the wrong number for F&F, that's why you're having problems. If you want to do F&F with that, you can do:

Multiple of 20 stitches

Row 1: Knit
Row 2: Knit
Row 3: k1; (k2tog) * 3; (yo, k1) * 6; (k2tog) * 3; k1
Row 4: Purl

I also really recommend stitch markers.

Aha! Yeah, Stitch & Bitch Nation's instructions for yo makes it really confusing, and a lot of people learned from them and spread it further. "Yarn over" really just means "move the yarn from back to front" -- yo/k1 is basically just k1 done with the yarn in the same position as you purl in.

Feather & fan is an easy lace pattern to learn from, too, because there's only one lace row, and there's always the same number of stitches on the needles.

I totally have that problem! It doesn't help that we have so much yarn that we bought thinking "oh, I'll do something with this someday", so every time I take down the yarn bins and go through them, I want to start something new with that yarn, or that one, or that one ...

(And I'm glad it's all lining up, and am happy to provide the help! It cracks me up that so many DW devs are also knitters -- I suppose it speaks to the same section of the brain.)

What kind of colors do you like? We have lots of yarn. :)

Ha! me too. :)

I'll check and see what I have. (Y'all are getting holiday bonuses anyway; I see no reason why yours can't also include yarn. *G*)

Oh, is that what that was? I thought it was the cat ...

I should also add -- do you have a Ravelry account? If you do, check my projects (username synecdochic, of course) -- I have a few F&F projects that you can see.

Feather and fan should work fine in the round, you just need to remember to knit on row 2 and purl on row 4 (I cheated and looked it up here :>

For eyelets I'd do yarn overs and knit 2 togethers rather than increases and decreases... I googled for that and found this drawstring bag pattern which might be of use to give you some pointers - if you're having more fun just figuring things out for yourself, just don't clicky the links :)

ah of course... :) I don't tend to think of a yo as an increase as I tend to use it for decorative things and use other methods of increasing... :)
