Hmmm pocket just said I'm in the top 1% of readers this year (approx 5M words)

I hadn't realized I was using it that much -- but on further thought almost every link I follow goes into pocket first. It helps keep things accessible when my internet connection is wonky (as it so often is!)

I said this to finch on Twitter, but I got into the top 5% and I really don't use Pocket except for storage? Like, either I'm reading articles and the ones I like I'll often just send to Pocket to keep for later, or I put things in Pocket I intend to read someday, but since I almost never open Pocket I don't usually read them.

So I'm kind of wondering if they're counting anything you put in as 'read' even if you don't archive it or anything.

Archive definitely doesn't enter the equation because I never use it. I would say they count the 'mark as read' action.

As far as I know, that's the same thing for Pocket. The site only has an "archive" button that I can find anyway? But regardless, that's kind of my point, that I'm not reading on the site and thus not interacting with it to mark things as read/archive/whatever so I'm suspicious of how much it's saying I've "read". (Or I just read WAY more than I think I do so that my miniscule amount of interaction with the site actually does count for a lot of reading, idk?)

Oh interesting. That would make some sense. (I used to keep Pocket as a permanent storage of articles offline rather than archiving after I was done. Stopped when it got unwieldy but I can kinda see the logic of counting even when not archived)

I've only had my account for a couple of months, and yet it said I was in the top 5%. I do use it for storing fanfic up to 15K words or so, but I'm still surprised it adds up to that much.

Yes! I mean there's something to be said for the long tail, but basically it's regular reading habits, no need to even try anything...

I sort of wonder what the distribution looks like now!

I do a reasonable chunk of reading, but I didn't really think it was a lot.

I'm cranky because Chrome has stopped showing the red ribbon in the address bar so when I blunder in elseways I can mark it as read from the window.

What was the red ribbon in the address bar? I don't think i ever noticed that

I had a plugin that checked whether the current page was empocketed or not, and indicated via tiny ribbon bookmark icon. You could save/mark read by clicking on it.

Ahhhhh gotcha! That sounds nifty, sad that it doesn't work anymore :/
