Both looked fine on DW to me (and showed the DW head);

Here I see "</b></a>" + LJ head in front of the first one but but a DW head (with no code) in front of the second one.

What was the input for the two versions? "lj user=afuna" for the first and "user name=afuna" for the second?

Nope, the first one was manually entered (span class="ljuser"...), and the second one was using the user tag. (Either lj user=, or user name=) works.
