Down the rabbit hole
Thursday, January 10th, 2013 09:33 pmDiscovered IAMPETH, now irretrievably lost down the rabbit hole of copperplate (engrosser's script).
Stopped at lowercase because I was feeling overwhelmed. Capitals can wait another time!
It is so much fun though. I'm unhappy with my hairlines so far or well the contrast between the thicks and thins but I'm really happy in the effort.
So far Zebra G + j jerbin l'opera rouge fountain pen ink has given me the best hairlines. Most of my thicker inks are not giving me fine lines at all. I guess this is to be expected?
I also tried a couple more flexible pointed nibs but i need more practice lightening my hand. Too many embarrassing splurts and blotches!
I think I'll need to find something cheaper than this sketch pad for drills though :)
On the other hand, working on fine paper is its own reward.
Ps have figured out that when I'm hungry to code my head tingles. When I'm hungry to do calligraphy my elbows tingle.
My stomach growls when I'm just plain hungry :p
Pps I'm still somewhat uh adjusting to the thought that I may enjoy doing some form of art for its own sake. I've always assumed I'm too literal to I dunno do stuff like this. I think it helps that the letterforms do have their own basic forms already so it's not like I'm starting totally from scratch
Now I just need to find something I actually want to write ;)
So far it's been practice drills and practice labeling stuff and practice addressing gift cards and practice addressing angpaos (am not the one giving them! Just ended up writing...) and practice writing thank you cards.
The kinds of transitory things where I'm not ashamed to give them out but not anything I actually want to keep >.>
