Dr. Crusher was the first doctor; she was replaced in the second season by Dr. Pulaski, but came back in the third season (I think?).

Ohhh. I thought for some reason that Dr. Pulaski left before the third episode (I remember that specifically: "three"), but perhaps I was thinking of the third season...

That does explain a bit of the inconsistency between the way things fit into the I remembered.
