Eep! Make sure you get a second opinion on that eyelash thing--I have the same non-double-eyelids (meaning that my eyelashes are pretty sparse and ugly) but I've never been warned that it'll poke into my eyes. Although my mother's also broached the subject of getting surgery to "open up my eyes." But no way am I getting cosmetic surgery. Now...I'm scared.
And I'm pretty sure that a lot of Asians don't have a double eyelid.
Have you tried contacts? My eyes are at -7/-7.5 and not yet stable, though hopefully it's slowing down, but I still got contacts this year and it's been great. (And I'm too young for laser surgery, though I'll probably get it in 5-10 years.)
