Aha! Yeah, Stitch & Bitch Nation's instructions for yo makes it really confusing, and a lot of people learned from them and spread it further. "Yarn over" really just means "move the yarn from back to front" -- yo/k1 is basically just k1 done with the yarn in the same position as you purl in.

Feather & fan is an easy lace pattern to learn from, too, because there's only one lace row, and there's always the same number of stitches on the needles.
