(gsoc is coming up, which means that any project big enough that I can study it to learn a new programming language is probably also big enough that it'll be swamped by gsoc applications / mentoring all the other new people. So I actually chose a pretty horrible time and maybe I should go do something else now and come back to this another time)

Not necessarily--a lot of the time it's only a few people in the project involved with that stuff. For instance, Django only has three mentory people listed for 2014, and I bet there are way more people than that who could look at pull requests.

Ooooh that's good to know. I just don't want to get in the way!

(But it's so much fun digging into django i was sad when I thought I'd have to put off contributing)

Soooo I figure I'll just make sure not to work on anything gsoc students are proposing and the otherwise just keep on plugging on
