Silly, it's for pregnant ladies to keep their placentas clean. Dirty placentas lead to dirty minds, of course, and you wouldn't want that, would you?

My mum uses that since someone got for her years back. It's still very gross to me. I heard some HK artists' take placenta (as in EAT) to keep their youthful looks... -_-'''

Yes, I know people who have made drinks out of their child's placenta's - it is supposed to help re-nourish the mother. We went for planting it under a newly planted tree instead - and the tree is very happy!
