Heh, so I decided it was time for me to check some of my settings on LJ, and my fingers automatically started typing dream.fu (my dev server; link only works from my computer). I realized how silly that was, so I started typing again and ended up on dreamwidth.org (oops). Finally got it right on the third try (but almost added a ".bml" at the end by habit *g* )

There's a big blue bar up there with helpful information, but since I blocked javascript on LJ some time ago, I can't close it. It's sitting there taunting me :-(

Easily solved, but I can't be bothered to do so right now. Since I'm using a non-custom style, it doesn't show up on my friends page, only on some of the site pages, which I rarely end up on anyway.

Just got the email telling me that my 1739 public entries on LJ have been made friends-only.

I changed the latest one to be public, and that's it.

I thought I'd be sadder, but I guess I've had plenty of time to get used to the idea. Like most other things in my life (it seems), I'd managed to put it off long past the time it was obvious it needed to be done.

(Long slow breakups that just fade away into nothing, yup that's me.)

(okay, a wee bit of sentimentality: I'm imagining that I just tucked my LJ journal in under covers, closed the lights, and wished it a good night)

Block, unblock, block

Aghhhhh okay so I've been blocked on writing in my journal for a while now. I keep wanting to post stuff and linkspam, but I get stuck trying to decide whether to crosspost or not.

Mostly what's stopping me is the Driving Revenue stuff.

If you don't know what I'm talking about: Driving Revenue stuff (cut because most of you have heard this before) )

The more I think about it, the less I want to put up posts with any kind of links on LJ, and that's hard, because links are the backbone of the web. How will I show you guys COOL (and DISGUSTING) stuff if I can't link you?

So, there's this Three Weeks for Dreamwidth, a celebration of DW going into open beta, which is a content-fest where you post (select) entries to only your Dreamwidth journal and not repost it anywhere else for three weeks. So far there's been a lot of amazing and positive content. I'm not officially part of it, and the fest doesn't ask for all crossposting to stop, but I feel like I need to step away in order to get past this block. I'm turning off crossposting for the next three weeks; I haven't yet decided what I'm going to do long-term.

*deep breath* If you want to say something, I've turned on screening for anonymous comments on this entry for both LJ and DW. I've also disabled IP logging for comments on LJ.

The vgifts won't go O_O

I rather am used to the old behavior of having vgifts disappear after a couple of weeks. So I figured I'd just go and hide the oldest of the latest ten vgifts that are showing up on my profile to bring back a semblance of old behavior... and now I'm finding that the next oldest one pops up in its place.

*facepalm*

Is there any way to stop this, or do I need to click on each one individually?

ETA: Hmm never mind. I realized I could open up them up in new tabs ten at a time, so that makes cleanup easier.

ETA 2: Clean \o/ And man do I love [personal profile] aveleh and her snowflake cookies ♥

Oops, notifs

I appear to have done something that is now preventing me from being notified for any comments that were made to my LJ. Not sure if other kinds of notifications were affected -- I'm going to try to keep up in other ways but uhhh if I miss a reply to one of my entries or one of my comments, well,

IT'S NOT YOU, IT'S ME.

ETA:

Checked and unchecked checkboxes and I'm not sure what hit what, but I have LJ comment notifs back again :)

If you have my multiple subscriptions script, please note that it no longer works with LiveJournal: LJ has changed the way deleting works, so that it's easier to delete multiple subscriptions quickly, rendering my script obsolete. I'm quite pleased about this. It's one of my dreams to have all my scripts be made obsolete because the site has made them unnecessary.

However, my script is now interfering and preventing any subscriptions from being deleted at all. This is not LJ's fault, and it's very easy to fix:

If you're only using the script on LJ, you'll need to delete the script by right-clicking on the greasemonkey smiling face, opening the scripts dialog window, and then deleting the script from the dialog window.

If you're using it on other sites (such as Dreamwidth), don't delete the script. Instead, select the script, and then delete livejournal.com from the list of included sites, to the right.

Thanks [personal profile] azurelunatic for letting me know!

Consolidating

Mmm, so I've cleaned up my profile information on LJ to the bare minimum -- basically tidied out all the information I'm not using. That includes my old ICQ (ahaha) account number.

I've also also tidied up my friends list, unfollowing everyone who looks to have moved over to Dreamwidth, since that's way easier for me. Please let me know if I removed you by mistake. I double-checked, but tickies and stuff... and stuff.

Distraction *handwave vaguely* Ooh look, shiny.

Hey all, as much as possible, please comment on my entries on DW rather than on LJ. (I've changed the footer on the crosspost to encourage that, as well)

Lately, I've been having trouble accessing LJ from home (I've been having trouble accessing a couple of sites, but LJ in particular ends up white-paging on me every few requests). Also, and maybe related to the first, my session keeps losing itself, and for various reasons, I find myself neglecting to log back in to LJ when I get logged out.

I have no intention of stopping crossposting, or of turning off comments on LJ entries, and I am still reading my friends page from work (*cough*). But what it adds up to is that I'm having difficulty responding to and managing my comments on LJ. So yeah, if you're trying to decide between replying on LJ or replying on DW, please do click on the links to DW at the bottom of each entry.

Thanks <3

Urgent security notice: embedded content security breach

And a few things:

Easiest way to know if you've been infected is to look at the top entry on http://www.livejournal.com/editjournal.bml, and check for any <lj-embed> tags. (Mine had four in a row; I don't know if that is the case for everyone)

LiveJournal has temporarily disabled embeds for your safety, so if you're not already infected, you can't be anymore.

Dreamwidth is not affected. Clone sites like InsaneJournal and DeadJournal, I'm not sure; my guess is they're not, but it depends on how they've set up embeds.

(I know it's irrational, but my journal feels dirty now :-()

ETA: After poking about a bit, I am pretty sure (some 95%) that IJ and DJ are not affected

ETA2: Official entry
afuna: Cat under a blanket. Text: "Cats are just little people with Fur and Fangs" (Default)
Taking a few people off default view here, who are crossposting from DW to LJ, and don't have any LJ-specific entries. Should make it easier for me to catch up to my friendspage/readpage, and not miss entries because I think I've read everything past that point!

ETA: *headscratch* I just realized what I was missing about this entry.

this kind of entry only makes sense when you're defriending people, and then asking them to ping you if you removed them accidentally? I wanted to ask about that, but felt weird mentioning names, and it's not like filter memberlists are public or anything.

*switches mood*

My morning was nicely cheered, seeing this entry in [livejournal.com profile] changelog:

Fixing thread expansion on Safari.

(DW got a shoutout! As did I! And issue got fixed, hooray!)

Whoo! Remember the graph I showed you guys a while back? [livejournal.com profile] foxfirefey just released the source ^____^

Note: I think you need to be at least fairly technical and have Python on your system to use it.
afuna: Cat under a blanket. Text: "Cats are just little people with Fur and Fangs" (Default)
I've been thinking about this a bit, and I will be moving my main posting to DW, but continue lurking here to read my friends page. Ironically, I've started reading my friends page here more regularly, since I got my Dreamwidth account. Something about being so happy over there carries over to being more sociable over here, too.

I will continue archiving my Twitter entries on my LJ, but I will not be posting them to DW. I will also cross-post from DW to LJ, assuming I don't forget -- may be a slight lag between when I post there versus here, because I end up too lazy to open a second update window, but entries with substance length will make their way here eventually.

There will be a crossposter tool soon! Which will be awesome, and will make crossposting much easier, and give me no excuse not to post entries to here.

PS. feature for the day: Tags on Month page!

Implemented a couple of weeks ago, but got overlooked among all the other style system changse.

So [livejournal.com profile] foxfirefey did this nifty program for generating visualization of network linkage from fdata. I volunteered to be a guinea pig, and got this! (I LIKE IT)

Someone pointed out http://www.livejournal.com/stats.bml on IRC, which has a strange outlier for age 29.

Strange outlier wasn't there a year ago! http://web.archive.org/web/20080312210339/http://www.livejournal.com/stats.bml

What's going on?

(I suspect someone targeted the year 1980 as a nice round number that's above 18. But... but. Now my curiosity is itching.)

Three new scripts

afuna: Cat under a blanket. Text: "Cats are just little people with Fur and Fangs" (Default)
Three new scripts. Wrote them late last year, never got around to publishing them:

  • LiveJournal Default Memory Security
Set a default initial security when creating new memories.

  • LiveJournal Rage Goggles
Inspired by Google's Mail Goggles, this script makes you solve a math problem, before you post that comment you know you're going to regret later. "Rage-goggled" ljuser-head shows up in the comment form to indicate that the script is active. Click on it for options: you can whitelist a journal temporarily or permanently.

  • LiveJournal Track from Navbar
Adds a convenience link to the navbar, pointing to the track this journal's entries page.

As always, the rest of my scripts can be found on my site.
afuna: Cat under a blanket. Text: "Cats are just little people with Fur and Fangs" (Default)
One thing that has frustrated me about interacting with LiveJournal programmatically, is that ?format=light does not work on all pages. It's not really something that affects most users would notice, but certain (Greasemonkey) scripts would be much much easier to write if the entry/journal pages could be guaranteed to follow the same format.

Mostly I've kludged around it by working off of the archive pages, which respond to ?format=light, so I could get data consistently. I have a script which scrapes the lj-cut text, so it can be seen in the inbox which does this. [livejournal.com profile] murklins has done me one better, with a script which lj-cuts your inbox, like the entry text. I do not know how I ever lived without this. Lifesaver. Adore, love. Seriously.

But for other pages, it's been a process of trial and error, trying to figure out whether ?format=light is supported (tag page supports it, showing a page based on s1shortcomings). Uh. Archive pages, as mentioned above. Reply pages and entry pages, obviously, using core, I think.

Not affected by ?format=light are friends and recent entries. LJ site scheme pages, meanwhile depend on the user's site scheme, unless you append ?usescheme=blah, which I always forget to /o\

It's all possible, but it can get messy depending on what you're trying to do. Which is why I love that LJ offers a mobile view. Love <3

The gist of it is that LiveJournal offers a minimalistic view for mobile phones/browsers (I suspect screenreaders could benefit). No header graphics, less junk overall, more consistent look/feel, and most importantly if you're hijacking it for scripting, it works consistently! To trigger, you need to supply the appropriate user agent:

GM_xmlhttpRequest({
   method: "GET",
   headers: {"User-Agent":"w"},
   url: $url_here,
   onload: function(details) {
       // do something with details.responseText
   });

The important part is the useragent line. The rest is just the normal stuff you need to fetch and process a page.

I haven't used it in an actual script. And since I don't play around with LJ much anymore, I'm not sure when I will. But it is a potential solution to what has up to now been a tedious problem.

Hey,

I'm cleaning up my friends list, but only to remove abandoned journals, for people with multiple journals.

If I delete real-you by accident, let me know!

In other words, I just made Web admin. It's taking its time sinking in ;-)

There's so much to look at, and so much to do. Web is going to be, mm, interesting to admin.

PS. My first year in Support is in a couple of weeks! That also is taking its time sinking in ;p
